Mobile Data Traffic Is Up, Up and Away
Making your site mobile-friendly is often at the bottom of the long list of things to do, but with Cisco recently releasing a white paper detailing the trends in mobile traffic, delaying making your site mobile friendly could have a bigger impact on your business or blog than you think…
Cisco Visual Networking Index recently released a white paper analyzing the use and growth of mobile data. As a world premier supplier of networking equipment. including Midphase’s world-leading infrastructure, how users access information is pretty important to them. That makes us, as host of said information, pay attention to this insight too.
Cisco found in its research that in 2014 global mobile data traffic grew by 69% more than in 2013. This totals to 2.5 exabytes per month or 30 exabytes a year. In 2014 the mobile data traffic was nearly 30 times the size of the entire internet in 2000. More than half of the recorded data was comprised of mobile video traffic.
Before we go any further, the existence of an exabyte needs to be explained. An exabyte is the equivalent of 1 billion gigabytes or 1 million terabytes. Better know as HUGE! Keep in mind as we continue that the amount of data is very large.
By using this data Cisco was able to predict the future in mobile data for the next four years. In their estimation we can expect the following to occur by 2019:
- The monthly global mobile data to surpass 24.3 exabytes (meaning it will grow in a month what it has previously grown in a year)
- The total number of mobile-connected devices will surpass the world’s population
- Smartphones will account for three-quarters of mobile data traffic
- More and more traffic will depend on 4G connections rather than WiFi
This growth shows the importance of having a responsive website. Responsive web design means that no matter what type of screen used to view your site (mobile, tablet, PC, etc) your site will automatically adjust for easy viewing.
Jeffrey Veen, web design guru and a former Adobe executive, recently explained, “Day by day, the number of devices, platforms, and browsers that need to work with your site grows. Responsive web design represents a fundamental shift in how we’ll build websites for the decade to come.”. Responsive sites are user-friendly of course, but responsiveness means much more than that: responsiveness makes websites searchable.
The good news is that creating a responsive site is not difficult and, to make it even easier, it can be done quickly and simply by using our website builder.
